8 Things I Did to Have an Internet Business

A few days ago while I was looking for something among my things, I found the book that appears in the image. I had already forgotten that it was out there and discovering it brought back so many memories that motivated me to write this post.

This book is called “The Business Is On The Internet“written by Peter Cohan and I bought it about 12 years ago. I reckon it was late 2000 when I was snooping around in a book store and it suddenly caught my eye in such a way that without thinking too much, I bought it!

Being right now here in front of my laptop writing for my own business and knowing that after I click the publish button this article will reach 10,000 people this day is more than gratifying. And I do not say it with boastfulness, on the contrary, I say it with gratitude and emotion because there are days that I still do not think I can enjoy what many call the “dotcom lifestyle”.

However, not everything was easy or from one day to the next. There were many things that I did and that I share with you today.

Things I did to have an Internet business

1. Love it with all your heart

Like any other business, everything starts with a dream. The dream of wanting to achieve it. But more than that, you need to want it with all your heart. When I bought that book there was something inside me that made me dream in front of my own internet business. He didn’t know how or when. He just knew that he wanted him enough.

2. Believe that you can

The second thing I did was believe that I could. I never doubted that I could do it. I always thought “if they can, I can”. Despite not being an expert, I never doubted that I could learn anything in order to achieve it.

3. Learn what it takes

I was willing to learn whatever it took to have an online business. I never doubted my ability to learn. I studied many things during the process. Today I know a bit about HTML, something about programming, I learned about web design, I had to understand how the Internet works (technically) and of course how blogs work and how they can become a business.

4. I gathered laziness

I have spent many hours reading, taking courses, videos and tutorials. In fact, I dare say that I have spent more hours reading than writing. I was never lazy to sit as long as necessary in front of my computer to learn how to do something. And for the record, today it is easier to learn. Before there was not so much information at hand.

5. I have invested what is necessary

Every business requires investment. And how can you pretend have a great business, if we are not willing to invest? During those years it took me to achieve it, I invested a lot of money. Some will call it a loss, I call it an investment.

I invested in buying the book, and other books, I invested in buying several domains (some never served me more than for learning), I have bought hostings, I have paid for online courses, and for a lot of other things just for trying. I have attended seminars (not cheap) to listen to great experts and Internet gurus. In short, there is a lot of money invested in that dream that today returns multiplied.

6. I have tried in many ways

If one thing doesn’t work, you try another. If it doesn’t come out one way, you try another. That is exactly what I have done. Many of you know this blog and other successful blogs that I have, however few know that I have had at least 15 blogs with all the infrastructure, which have not worked. And not because they are bad deals, simply because they served as trial and error. Failing once is not the end of the world. Failing once just means you’re closer to the attempt that will work.

7. Keep me updated

Finally, I still apply all of the above. I am convinced that staying in the market means adapting quickly. I keep reading, I keep learning, I keep applying, I keep dreaming of going further. That is probably the process by which I am here today writing about Internet businesses.

8. I am not satisfied

I personally consider myself a grateful person. I greatly value my family, my nation, my businesses, and I thank my God for all his blessings. But I am not satisfied. I don’t allow myself to settle in and believe that everything is done. I always go for more, I keep going and I still believe that more can always be achieved. And then you have a “virtuous” cycle where it seems that things get better and better and you grow more and more each day.

So, I summarize this post in one sentence: keep believing, keep learning. And I’m sure that’s it the secret of success in all businesses.
